What Are Asphalt Shingle Roofs?
Asphalt shingles are among the most popular roofing materials for homeowners because of their durability, affordability, and style options. But what is an asphalt shingle and what can you expect with this material?
These shingles are constructed using an asphalt-saturated base made of fiberglass or other organic materials covered with asphalt on either one or both sides of the shingle. That layer of asphalt is then covered with a mixture of mica, schist, slate, ceramic, stone or quartz. On the back, the shingle is covered with sand, talc, or mica to keep the shingles from sticking together.
The most common type of asphalt shingle is known as a three-tab shingle, but there are actually three different types of asphalt shingles:
- Three-tab shingle: The three-tab shingle is a common material on many homes because it’s affordable and can last for a couple of decades with proper maintenance. This style has a clean and horizontal look and is marked by its three tabs on the outside of the shingle, which adds aesthetic appeal.
- Dimensional shingle: For a more decorative and durable option, dimensional shingles are quickly rising to be the most popular asphalt shingle roofing used today. These shingles are very durable and have a multi-dimensional texture for added depth. Dimensional shingles are crafted from two layers of shingle and are often available in several color varieties.
- Luxury shingle: Often used as a less expensive alternative to cedar or slate shingles, luxury shingles are the most durable asphalt shingle and are designed to mimic these more expensive roofing materials. The luxury shingle is constructed from several layers for added strength against heavy and harsh weather and impacts.
